Cardiology Services
Providence Heart & Vascular Institute is the premier cardiac and heart care facility in South Carolina. Equipped with six catheterization labs, four surgical suites and leading-edge electrophysiology labs, the Heart Institute is consistently among the first to introduce new procedures such as MIDCAB (minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass), "off-pump" or "beating heart" surgery and drug-eluting stents.

Cardiac Catheterization Lab
Averaging nearly 7,000 cases per year, the hospital's cardiac catheterization laboratory is a vital component of the cardiac services delivered to the people of South Carolina by Providence Heart & Vascular Institute. Both diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed in thehospital's six catheterization labs. Procedures include percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), directional coronary atherectomy (DCA), coronary stenting, rotational atherectomy (rotablator), intracoronary ultrasound imaging, myocardial biopsy.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Providence Heart & Vascular Institute's nationally certified cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program supports both heart patients and those who exhibit potential risk for heart disease. The program is led by a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, exercise physiologists, a registered dietitian and a vocational rehabilitation counselor, all under the direction of a cardiologist. An individualized program is designed for each participant and includes cardiac education, participation in supervised exercise sessions, stress management and relaxation, nutritional counseling and education, individual counseling and vocational rehabilitation. A physician's referral is required.

Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery
More than 26,000 open-heart procedures have been performed since Providence Heart & Vascular Institute opened its doors in 1974. Today, Providence performs more open-heart surgery procedures than any other hospital in South Carolina. Almost 90% of all coronary artery bypass surgeries at Providence Heart & Vascular Institute are performed on beating hearts.

Electrophysiology Procedures
Electrophysiology is the special treatment of complex heart rhythms, or heart arrhythmias. Providence Heart & Vascular Institute's electrophysiology specialists, along with nurse specialists and other highly trained technicians, bring considerable medical expertise in the evaluation and treatment of heart rhythm problems and the complications they pose.
Providence Heart & Vascular Institute's state-of-the-art electrophysiology (EP) department provides a full range of services, including diagnostic testing and interventional therapies like ablation and the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The EP staff performs more than 2,000 electrophysiology-related procedures each year.

Providence SC Chest Tumor Consortium
This unique program is designed to help patients with lung cancer receive the most comprehensive, timely, individualized treatment plans available. The Chest Tumor Consortium consists of a multidisciplinary group of physicians who meet at Providence on a regular basis to analyze medical information on patients with chest tumors to help determine the best and most efficient treatment plan for these individuals.

School of Cardiovascular Diagnostics
Providence Heart & Vascular Institute's School of Cardiovascular Diagnostics is the only cardiovascular technology program in South Carolina accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
