Providence Hospitals Receives $250,000 Grant from Duke Endowment

Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals recently received a $250,000 grant from the Duke Endowment to purchase an automated medication management system that uses bar coding to improve quality of care and patient safety.

The electronic bar coding system will decrease legibility issues with prescriptions, decrease the opportunity for error on manually transcribed orders, and reduce error between dispensing and patient administration. The system provides constant pharmacy surveillance and will ensure billing accuracy. In addition, it allows staff to access patient history from multiple points of care.

“We are very thankful to receive this grant. The automated medication management system will help continue our efforts to place patient safety at the top of our priorities,” said Providence CEO Sister Judith Ann Karam.

Through its Health Care Division, The Duke Endowment provides support for not-for-profit health care organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina.
