Dr. Richard E. Umbach comes from a family with a lot of heart, so it should come as no surprise that Rick Umbach has devoted his life to diagnosing, preventing and curing heart conditions. His commitment was first born at Auburn University, where Dr. Umbach graduated with a degree in biology. The commitment was strengthened at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. By the time Dr. Umbach completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Yale, cardiology had become both his career calling and his life’s calling. His skills, expertise and research – he has been an investigator in numerous clinical trials – have been important to the emergence of Providence as “South Carolina’s Heart Hospital.”
Along the way, Dr. Umbach found a deep and lasting love with his wife Susan,
and has experienced the joys that come with six children and four grandchildren. While Dr. Umbach’s success as a parent and a professional no doubt comes from a number of places, his achievements most probably stem from the gift handed down to him by his parents – a big, strong, full heart. And for 30 years, he’s been working to ensure that his patients have every chance to enjoy that same gift.
