Student Nurse Externship

Nursing offers a wide selection of specialty practice areas. To make sure you're on the right track, Providence Hospitals would like you to consider the Student Nurse Externship. The Student Nurse Externship is designed to offer you a sample of "real world" nursing as you determine your professional practice interest. The 11-week paid program pairs you with skilled registered nurse preceptors in a variety of practice settings at Providence. You'll have the opportunity to practice nursing skills in a safe, supervised environment.

Program Description

• Scheduled rotations through three different nursing departments. Placement for departments depends upon personal interest identified during the interviewing process and department availability.
• Shadowing opportunities to additional nursing departments and allied health areas weekly on Wednesdays.
• Additional learning opportunities through weekly seminars and simulation experiences.
• Opportunities to network with other students from several area colleges.
  

Who Can Apply for Student Nurse Externship?

Nursing students who are entering their senior year.

Requirements for Application

• Submit online application between December 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012.  Applications submitted prior to December 1, 2011 may not be considered. Specify Nurse Track Externship as the position for which you are applying for. You must send two Faculty Reference Forms and transcripts to complete your application by the end of the business day on January 31, 2012. Provide official transcripts from your current nursing program.
• Provide two Faculty Reference Forms from your nursing instructors
• You may send these documents to Providence Hospitals Education Department, ATTN: Tabitha Soderstrom, 2435 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29204. Only completed applications will be considered.
• Once applications and references are reviewed, selected applicants will complete a panel interview comprised of the Extern Coordinator, Human Resource representative and Nurse Managers.
• You must be able to work Wednesdays in order to participate in the program.
