Providence Heart & Vascular Institute is the premier cardiac care facility in South Carolina. Equipped with six catheterization labs, four surgical suites and leading-edge electrophysiology labs, the Heart Institute is consistently among the first to introduce new procedures such as MIDCAB (minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass), "off-pump" or "beating heart" surgery and drug-eluting stents.

Cardiac Catheterization Lab

Averaging nearly 7,000 cases per year, the hospital's cardiac catheterization laboratory is a vital component of the cardiac services delivered to the people of South Carolina by Providence Heart & Vascular Institute. Both diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed in thehospital's six catheterization labs. Procedures include percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), directional coronary atherectomy (DCA), coronary stenting, rotational atherectomy (rotablator), intracoronary ultrasound imaging, myocardial biopsy.

Electrophysiology Procedures

Providence Heart & Vascular Institute cardiologists have taken a leading role in the field of electrophysiology -- the diagnosis and repair of the heart's electrical system. Providence Heart & Vascular Institute's state-of-the-art electrophysiology (EP) department provides a full range of services, including diagnostic testing and interventional therapies like ablation and the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The EP staff performs more than 2,000 electrophysiology-related procedures each year.

Electrophysiology is the special treatment of complex heart rhythms, or heart arrhythmias. Providence Heart & Vascular Institute's electrophysiology specialists, along with nurse specialists and other highly trained technicians, bring considerable medical expertise in the evaluation and treatment of heart rhythm problems and the complications they pose.
