We couldn’t have ordered more beautiful weather than we had on April 30!
It’s hard to believe we just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Providence Heart & Sole Women’s Five Miler. You really turned out in volume to help us call attention to the issue of heart disease in women. Nearly 2,100 of you ran and walked our annual event—an increase of almost 600 women!
We had an exciting finish to our five-mile run, with Caitlin Chrisman of Charlotte, N.C., winning in 29:30, just a fraction of a second ahead of her friend Meagan Nedlo, also of Charlotte. These two women came across the finish line holding hands and smiling as though they had exerted no effort at all! We were pleased to welcome these ladies to our event for the first time and hope they’ll return again next year.
We were also happy to have nearly 700 participants from Girls on the Run Columbia, an afterschool program for young girls that promotes self-esteem and healthy living. About 350 elementary and middle school girls completed their first official 3-mile course with us, running alongside their training buddies and coaches. The future of running rests with today’s young girls, and we couldn’t have been more pleased to have these fantastic young ladies, coaches and training partners with us this year.
There were many of you who joined us for the first time, and that makes us very happy. We try hard to put on an event where the first-time runner and walker feel supported and welcome. All the women who participate in Heart & Sole are special to us, and that’s the way we want to make you feel. So whether you’re an elite runner, a recreational athlete or someone new to exercise, we want to show you the power of what a healthy lifestyle can do for you. Come join us next year on April 28 when we do it all over again—we can’t wait to see you!
