Edward D. Hopkins, Jr., M.D.

Ophthalmology

Better known as “Bud” to family and friends, Dr. Edward Darrell Hopkins, Jr., was born during the Great Depression in Boise, Idaho. When his uncle offered to bring Bud to Columbia in the summer of 1948, he realized a dream of attending college and thus began his cultural education at The Citadel, where he earned the highest rank available to sophomores as Corporal, and Commander of Company A his senior year. More prompting from his uncle resulted in Bud attending the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by an internship in the Army. Upon discharge, Dr. Hopkins accepted an Ophthalmology residency at Tulane University School of Medicine. In 1962, Dr. Hopkins returned to Columbia and joined Dr. Sheppard Dunn in practice.

Many credit Dr. Hopkins as being instrumental in building a strong ophthalmology program at Providence Hospital during the 1960s and ‘70’s. More significantly, Dr. Hopkins has always demonstrated a deep caring for his patients, no matter their station in life. With his wife, Leila, by his side, Dr. Hopkins now enjoys the memories of raising a son and three daughters and spending time with his grandchildren.
