Business and Soft Skills

In today’s increasingly service-oriented and culturally diverse business  community, effective interpersonal and communication skills, understanding of the fundamentals of our healthcare system, healthcare finance and operations, quality improvement, information systems, and organizational strategy and marketing are more important than ever for ensuring a smooth functioning and highly productive workforce.

More and more corporations around the world recognize that, in order to gain a competitive advantage, they also need to make sure their people know how to handle themselves at work and how to relate with their customers and peers. From showing empathy and optimism to extreme self-awareness to knowing what's going on around them, these vital competencies are an integral part of a progressive organization. They fall under the umbrella of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Emotional Intelligence refers to the personal-management and social skills that allow us to succeed in our interactions with other people. EI draws on two simple concepts: applying knowledge appropriately and applying feelings appropriately. Being intellectually and emotionally tuned in to a particular situation and adjusting our behavior according to what is best for the situation are considered to be extremely important determinants of professional and personal success.

To improve our Emotional Intelligence, we need to learn or develop a group of habits and behaviors to recognize feelings in ourselves and others and then take the appropriate action. This means recognizing negative or dysfunctional emotions and replacing them with positive or functionally useful ones. If we can improve our Emotional Intelligence “competency,” we can turn sadness into happiness, anxiety into acceptance, and fear into comfort. Programs that improve Emotional Intelligence combine activities of computer-based learning modules, interactive simulation and print media activities to develop basic skills. Employees who increase their Emotional Intelligence will be empowered to perform their jobs better and seek opportunities to grow.
