About Columbia

A family enjoying ColumbiaColumbia is conveniently located in the center of South Carolina. It lies at the junctions of Interstates 20, 26 and 77. It is South Carolina's most populated city with the state capital, the home of the University of South Carolina and the site of the South Carolina State Fair every October.

You would be hard pressed to find a more hospitable city than Columbia. The city is a business friendly environment with tree-lined streets, recreational facilities and great nightlife on the weekends. The Columbia Metropolitan Airport is less than 10 miles away, and an excellent freeway system puts our city within easy driving distance of Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Myrtle Beach or the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are numerous things for the entire family to see and do throughout the city. The Columbia area, also known as The Midlands, has three major rivers that run through it where the public can canoe, fly fish, or just hang out on the rocks during a lazy weekend. The 50,000-acre Lake Murray is another great place to cool off and have some fun!

As the capital of South Carolina, Columbia is a city rich with history. The business environment is welcoming, and the neighborhoods are symbols of old Southern charm. The tree-lined streets envelop neighbors and visitors alike. It is no wonder that Columbia was recognized as one of America's most livable mid-sized cities in 2004 by the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

Today the city is experiencing a significant amount of restoration, and continues to evolve through increased residential structures and economic development.

A large park system and a world-class zoo together make Columbia a city with plenty of green. Finlay Park is a 14-acre escape from city life. Finlay has become one of the most popular spots because of its central location. Concerts, festivals, picnics and Providence's very own Heart and Sole Race are held here. There are two playgrounds for children, and a waterfall that cascades down huge rocks in the back of the park.

Columbia Riverfront Park is two and a half miles of trail in the historic Columbia Canal. People can be found walking their dogs, running, riding bikes or just fishing along the path.

Riverbanks Zoological Park and Botanicals Garden has also been named as the number one traveled attraction in the southeast. Our exotic zoo houses more than 2,000 animals in their natural habitats. Not only can you see the rare white alligator, giraffes, zebras, ostriches and sea lions, but you can enjoy a walk through the beautiful gardens.

Whether you enjoy visiting places important in history, enjoying the arts, playing or watching sports, attending festivals, or participating in outdoor activities, Columbia is the place for you.
